In the beautiful setting of the Redwood Forest on Tarawera Road, the new Redwood Park Subdivision is one of Rotorua’s most prestigious new residential areas. The 42-lot stage of this development provided many geotechnical challenges including; earthworks, retaining walls, slope stability and sensitive soils. All of these variables had to be engineered to provide a functional and safe development whilst providing highly aesthetic results for the client and future residents.
BSK Consulting Engineers were engaged to provide investigation and design services for the more challenging geotechnical aspects. From this, BSK also provided a further foundation, retaining and stormwater solutions and site supervision.
The greatest challenges were the re-use of volcanic deposits that do not adhere to industry standard testing. Site supervision techniques were adjusted and tested so that the industry standard and regional infrastructure guide performance levels were maintained. This was aided by the use of the most up to date GPS earthworks equipment to ensure as-built landforms exactly matched design requirements.
