Located in Rotorua central city St Johns Church was tragically destroyed in fire early 2017. Construction on the new church began in late 2020. The project involved construction of a new church and complete re-development of the site. The church structure is a large rectangular structure with a monopitch roof and high brick-clad walls.
BSK completed structural design on the church and civil design for the pavements and stormwater disposal. The structure is constructed of structural steel and structural timber with a shallow concrete raft floor/foundation system.
The structure has very high brick-clad walls at the auditorium end of the building which caused structural design challenges. BSK developed a structural system which consisted of concentrically braced structural steel frames that are hidden within the walls and also developed a brick tie system that allowed for feature penetrations and patterns within the brick veneer.
BSK worked closely with the client, project manager and contractor throughout design and construction to achieve a successful project.
