Fenua Fala Hospital
Located on the Fakaofo Island group of Tokelau. This is a solid timber “Lockwood” structure on timber piles founded in concrete ground beams. The structure was designed for cyclone conditions. The prefabrication of timber components allowed for ease of delivery and construction on this remote island.
BSK Consulting Engineers were involved with this design from an early stage, including an initial site visit to Tokelau to meet with the village elders to discuss the proposal. The structural design required special attention to details from foundation level through to roof fixings to ensure they can stand up to the cyclone conditions experienced in this part of the world. Special consideration was also given to potential rising sea levels and appropriate durability requirements.
