The commercial hotel in Whakatane is a heritage building that dates back to 1917. The project involved the seismic strengthening of the original unreinforced masonry (URM) building as well as additions and alterations. In addition to the work on the main structure 20 individual motel units were added to the site. The building is now run as a restaurant and hotel complex.
BSK completed structural design on the motel units as well as the seismic retrofit and alterations of the main building. BSK also completed civil design for the pavements and stormwater disposal.
The motel units were designed as individual pre-fabricated ‘pods’ that were pieced together on-site much like a jigsaw puzzle. Although somewhat unconventional this was the client’s dream and after many brainstorming sessions, John Kronast developed practical solutions and details that nailed the clients brief. Sadly, John Kronast could not see the completion of the design and construction for this project but Brett, Chris & Cassie worked closely with Product X & the client to complete the project.
